Answer ALL questions

PART A – (10×2=20 marks)
1.   Define Stress and Strain.
2.   Define Bulk Modulus and Modulus of Rigidity.
3.   Explain the types of  Beams?
4.   Draw the shear force and Bending moment Diagram for Simply Supported beam carrying Point load at the mid span, UDL over a length and UVL over a length.
5.   Draw the shear force and Bending moment Diagram for Cantilever beam carrying Point load at the free end, UDL over a length and UVL over a length
6.   Mention the various types of stresses.
7.   Write the relationship between E, C, K.
8.   Explain the sign conventions for Shear force and Bending Moment Diagrams?
9.   Write the assumptions made in Theory of simple Bending?
10.                       A cantilever beam AB of span 6m is fixed at A and propped at B. The beam carries a udl of 2kN/m over its whole length. Find the reaction at propped end.

PART B– (5×16=80 marks)

12.                   A reinforced concrete column 500mm X 500mm in section is reinforced with 4 steel bar of 25mm diameter , one in each corner , the column is carrying a load of 1000KN. Find the stress in the concrete and steel bar.
13.          A bar of 30mm diameter is subjected to a pull of 60KN. The measured extension on gauge length of 200mm is 0.09mm and the change in diameter is 0.0039. calculate the poisson’s  ratio and the value of three moduli.
